How This Works
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). Body fat % estimated using the US Navy method (Hodgdon & Beckett 1984): uses waist, neck and height circumferences with logarithmic formula. More accurate than BMI alone but still an estimate — DEXA scan is the gold standard for body composition. Waist-height ratio = waist ÷ height; above 0.5 indicates increased metabolic risk.
Yes for most individuals. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat — a muscular athlete can have an "obese" BMI. Body fat percentage directly measures the proportion of fat tissue. For health risk, waist circumference is particularly important: visceral fat (around organs) is more metabolically dangerous than subcutaneous fat (under skin). Waist above 88cm (women) or 102cm (men) indicates significantly elevated cardiovascular risk regardless of BMI.
