How This Works

Scientific notation: number = coefficient × 10^exponent. To convert standard to scientific: count decimal places moved (positive for large numbers, negative for small). The coefficient must be ≥1 and <10. Example: 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴. Engineering notation uses exponents in multiples of 3 (kilo, mega, giga, etc.).

Scientific notation makes very large or very small numbers manageable. Avogadro's number (6.022×10²³) is far easier to write than 602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000. It also makes multiplication and division easier: multiply coefficients and add exponents. Essential in physics, chemistry, astronomy, and engineering where numbers span many orders of magnitude.
