How This Works

Mean = sum ÷ count. Median = middle value when sorted. Mode = most frequent value. Variance (sample) = sum of squared deviations ÷ (n−1). Standard deviation = √variance. IQR = Q3 − Q1. Uses n−1 (Bessel's correction) for sample standard deviation, which is more appropriate for samples rather than entire populations.

Variance is the average of squared deviations from the mean — squaring penalises outliers more heavily. Standard deviation is the square root of variance, which brings the unit back to the same scale as the original data. For example, if measuring heights in cm, variance is in cm² but standard deviation is in cm. Standard deviation is therefore more interpretable. Both measure the same thing: how spread out the data is.
